Lena is a very independent woman. She believes in herself and her strength to do things on her own. Lena appears to be indifferent to the affection of men and refuses to marry. In chapter 4, Lena states, "Men are all right for friends, but as soon as you marry them they turn into cranky old fathers, even the wild ones. They begin to tell you what's sensible and what's foolish, and want you to stick at home all the time. I prefer to be foolish when I feel like it, and be accountable to nobody" (165). Later on, Lena demonstrates her freedom by moving to San Francisco and becoming a successful dress maker. Although Lena does not wish to be married, she never denounces the value or sacredness of marriage. Her refusal of marriage is a personal choice in order to preserve her independence as a woman.

I liked being around women when I was a teenager. I was attracted to pretty girls, like Lena Lingard. I prefer having women as friends but not as someone to spend your entire life with. I would like friendships or temporary romantic relationships with women, but not as life partners. I enjoy having Antonia as a friend. I am more of a solitary person, so I would not embrace marriage life. I don’t value marriage as much as other people, like Antonia, do. Marriage is bad for everybody, for example, Antonia is happy in her marriage. I started dating Lena in Lincoln and I enjoyed it. However, I soon decided to move to Boston because Lena was distracting me from my studies. I thought I should focus on my academics more, instead of Lena. Currently, I am married and unhappy. There is no love or compassion between my wife and me. I do not think that marriage is necessary for everyone, and so I believe that it is not the best option for me.
